Washington D.C.

워싱턴D.C.

The Corner Bakery is a chain breakfast restaurant. You can find them throughout the DC area.

(The Treasury Department).

Although you can’t tell from these pictures, the front entrance to the White House was packed full of people and you had to wait for the groups to clear before getting a picture. Anyway, it was a gorgeous day in DC and we got some great pics of of the White House. Unfortunately, Obama wasn’t outside to shake anyone’s hand :(

세계은행(World Bank; IBRD). (International Bank for Reconstruction and Development)이 정식명칭이라고 한다.

IMG_8808

The International Monetary Fund or the IMF is not really talked about much here in the US but it’s a big deal to Koreans, as it was the intervening force during South Korea’s economic downturn in the late 1990’s. That recession is known by most Koreans as simply “IMF”.

While IMF has played an important role in Korea’s economic history, I tried explaining to Jihye the Federal Reserve’s importance in our recent recession. Most people don’t realize how important the Federal Reserve is not only to Americans but to other countries who frequently use our dollars in their markets.

*워싱턴 D.C.(Washington, D.C.)

The shot from in the front of the Lincoln Memorial overlooking the reflecting pool and the Washington Monument is probably one of the best you can get in DC.

The Lincoln Memorial is probably the finest monument in all of DC. And we came just in time for the 150th anniversary of Lincoln’s Gettysburg address! (The address is inscribed on the walls inside the memorial)

There were some Korean War Veterans that Jihye took a picture with that is unfortunately not featured on this blog (I’ll try to get her to post it). They were present at the Korean War Memorial for Veteran’s day weekend and it was such an honor to pay respects to such great men.

Some very pretty views of the Mall. I can’t wait to come back for the cherry blossoms in the spring.

All US states were recognized in the WWII Memorial. NY stand up!

It’s either a memorial or a museum in this part of town.

This is the actual counter top from the infamous Greensboro, NC Woolworth’s ‘sit-in’.

I have been to DC twice but I’ve yet to visit a museum. The problem is that there are so many! We settled on the American History Museum, which is really great tribute to American culture. There were many fascinating exibits featuring things like American money, transportation, pop culture,  wars at home and abroad, first lady dresses and the 13 star flag that Francis Scott Key saw when he penned our national anthem. A very impressive museum.

We then headed over to the National Archives, which is where the the original U.S. Constitution and the Declaration of Independence are kept. The National Archives also holds a copy of the Magna Carta, but it wasn’t on display for public viewing.

We continued our trek down the Mall until we reached the US Capitol Building, which is pretty much the end of the Mall. Since it was a Sunday, there were no members of Congress to take pictures with. Oh well, it was still a beautiful day!

After the sun went down it got real cold, real fast. We made our way back to our car which was parked by the White House. We popped into Au Bon Pain to rest our sore feet and grab a hot coffee.

The original Ford’s theatre where Abraham Lincoln was assassinated. I don’t think any shows go on in this building anymore but there is a newly constructed theatre (of the same name) right next door that looks like it’s got some shows goin’ on.

After we got our car we headed over to Georgetown, which is like a 15 minute drive from White House. It’s a real happenin’ area that’s got a mix of luxury stores and old buildings. There were a lot of great restaurants but since it was so cold, Jihye and I wanted to have some warm soup. DC doesn’t really have any must-have foods like Philly, so we ended up going with some Vietnamese food, which really hit the spot. We went out for some beers afterwards but we weren’t really feeling the Sunday night football fans, so we had one and hit the road.
